Privacy Policy

Last updated:  |  Effective from the same date

NeerShauchalay is a civic public-interest project. We are committed to your privacy. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your rights under India's Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act 2023.

1. What We Collect

We collect minimal data necessary to operate the service:

  • Phone number — when you sign in via OTP, stored securely in Supabase Auth. Used only for authentication; never shared or sold.
  • Submitted spots — location, description, and type of civic facility you add to the map.
  • Votes & reports — upvotes, downvotes, and issue reports you submit on existing spots.
  • Photos — images you voluntarily upload to verify a civic spot.
  • Device location — your browser may share your GPS location so we can center the map on you. This is never stored on our servers.

2. What We Do NOT Collect

  • No tracking cookies or browser fingerprinting
  • No advertising pixels or third-party retargeting
  • No persistent device identifiers beyond session tokens
  • No sale of personal data to any third party — ever

3. Local Storage (Your Device Only)

We use your browser's localStorage to remember:

  • Bookmarked spots — saved locally on your device only.
  • Theme preference — light or dark mode.
  • Cookie consent — your acknowledgement of this banner.

This data never leaves your device. You can clear it anytime from your browser settings.

4. Analytics

We use Plausible Analytics, a privacy-first, open-source analytics tool that:

  • Sets no cookies
  • Does not track individuals across sessions
  • Does not use fingerprinting
  • Is fully GDPR and DPDP compliant

We use it only to understand aggregate traffic (e.g., which cities are most searched) to improve the service.

5. Third-Party Services

NeerShauchalay relies on these external services:

  • Supabase — database, authentication, and file storage (EU/US data centers). Privacy policy: supabase.com/privacy
  • OpenStreetMap — map tiles. No personal data is sent. Policy: osmfoundation.org/Privacy_Policy
  • OSRM (Project-OSRM) — walking route calculation. Only coordinates are sent; no user identity.

6. Your Rights (DPDP Act 2023 & GDPR)

You have the right to:

  • Access — request a copy of data we hold about you
  • Correction — fix inaccurate data
  • Erasure — request deletion of your account and submitted data
  • Portability — export your submitted spots in JSON format
  • Withdraw consent — stop using the app and request account deletion at any time

To exercise any right, use the in-app "Report an Issue" form or email us. We will respond within 30 days.

7. Data Retention

Account data is retained as long as your account is active. Submitted spots are civic data and may be retained after account deletion for the benefit of the public (anonymised). You may request deletion of your submitted spots individually.

8. Children

NeerShauchalay is a civic utility, not targeted at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from minors. If you are a parent and believe your child has submitted data, contact us for immediate removal.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy. Changes will be posted here with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the app constitutes acceptance.
